Adams, James
James Adams moved from SC to MS around 1809. He was around 15 yrs old. As an adult he moved from Madison County MS to Texas. In 1834 he received a Texas land grant for a league and a labor of land, part of which he took on the banks of Caddo Lake, in what is now Marion county but then would have been Shelby County. His wife, whom he married in MS, and several children moved with him prior to 1840 to the area around Marshall, Harrison County, Texas but prior to 1840 was Shelby County. There are Bills of Sale recorded in Harrison County Courthouse for transactions between he and one of his sons, John L. Adams, which took place in Madison County MS around 1840. The children I can confirm were, John L., Elizabeth Ann, William W., Sarah M., Mary L. and James L. Adams. Records indicate that all were born in MS, but moved to Texas at a very early age. Two of the girls married brothers, Sarah and Elizabeth, Edward B. and Richard Jones and settled in Jefferson Texas. Sarah and Edward are buried in Jefferson. William W. is buried in Upshur County in Pleasant Grove Cemetery. James M. died around 1860. I don't know the circumstances of John L. and Mary L. Adams.
William W. was captured in Vicksburg on July 4, 1863 and was parolled shortly thereafter. William W. is my grgr grandfather and lived in the area around Upshur county Texas.
The family was quite wealthy upon coming to Texas. James died in 1845 and Lois, his wife, died in 1847. The children were orphans and guardians pretty well took everything the kids had. There are about 200 documents in the Harrison County Courthouse, Marshall, indicated the appointing of guardians, disposition of slaves, sale of land and slaves and petitions for monies in behalf of the kids for their upkeep.

Mr. Shipp, father of Eliza Jane was dead and her children fell heir to the inheritance of about $800.00. Jesse was appointed guardian of the children and for the next twenty years he had to make annual reports how he spent the money on them.On the 1850 census of Anderson County, Jesse and the children are listed along with one Susan ALLEN, age 68, b. NC. This would be Jesse's Mother, Susannah.Sofie SHIPP, age 63 on the census was born in GA. and is on the 1850 census of Cherokee County, TX.Jesse married Mary BRIDGES 9 April, 1853, but the marriage did not last, no children ( she later married someone else) he is living alone in 1860 and the 1870 census show his occupation as a Preacher. Jesse seem to have died between 1870 and 1880 as he is not on the 1880 census.
