    YOUNG, Samuel Christopher
Samuel Christopher Young (nicknamed Samson apparently due to exhibits of great strength during his early years)was born in 1819 in Union Co., South Carolina, to Wesley Young and Mary C. Johnson. Wesley and Mary migrated to Conecuh Co., Alabama, by 1820. Samuel grew up working on his father's farm and attended school at the Evergreen Academy when time would allow. He was still attending school in 1842 when a beautiful young teacher, Eleutheria Charlotte Green, arrived from Vermont. Samuel and all the other young boys and men were smitten by this 21 year old, Yankee teacher, but it was Samuel who won her hand in marriage. The ceremony took place on 18 September 1842, and was performed by Justice-of-the-Peace J.D. Travis, uncle to the fallen hero of the Alamo, William Barrett Travis. Eleutheria was the eldest child born (Oct. 1821)to Dr. Joel Green & Eleutheria Dunham Fay. The Green & Fay families were old New England families whose lines can be traced back to England & France. Samuel & Eleutheria quickly started their family with the birth of Helen M. Young in 1843. In 1844 Horace Green Young was born, and named after his mother's uncle, the renowned Dr. Horace Green of New York City. The third child, Samuel C. Young, Jr., was born in 1849; followed by Charles Young in March 1853. Shortly after the birth of Charles, Samuel packed up his family and headed for Texas. By 1854 the family had settled near Mt. Pleasant in Titus County. Samuel appears in the 1854 Titus County school census as the head of household with three children, Helen, Horace and Samuel enrolled in school. Living next door to Samuel was his brother, George Washington B. Young. In 1859 the fifth child was born to Samuel and Eleutheria: Joel Young. Samuel and his family were still residing in Titua County as late as 9 November 1860 when he received a land patent from the government for 133 acres. This was the only land patent ever issued to a "Young" in Titus County. Within five months Samuel and his family migrated approximately 165 miles southwest to Bell County, Texas. And, on 22 April 1861, Samuel's eldest son, Horace, enlisted in Co. B of the 5th Texas Calvary at Belton in Bell County. Horace would participate in numerous battles and campaigns, and then in April 1864 he was wounded during the Battle of Yellow Bayou, Lousiana. He suffered a gunshot to his arm between the elbow & wrist with one broken bone. Killed in the same battle was his best friend, William "Billy" Tomlinson. After the war, on 8 December 1870, at Falls County, Horace married William's sister, Amanda Tomlinson, daughter of James Kendrick Tomlinson and Sarah Jemima Stallworth. After his arrival in Bell County in 1861, Samuel seems to disappear from the public records, and by July 1864 he has died, and his widow marries William F. McMullen in Falls County on 14 July 1864. In plot 134 of the Bartlett Cemetery in Bell County, is buried a Sam Young. There is no headstone present today. Whether this is the grave of Samuel Christopher Young is not certain. However, there are no other recorded graves for any other Sam Young within this region of Texas. Eleutheria Charlotte Young McMullen would give birth to one child with her second husband. The child, Austin McMullen, was born in Falls County in 1865. Church records found in her hometown in Vermont indicate that Eleutheria died in Falls County in 1866 at the age of 45.
